City Wall Leuven by Flux Landscape Architecture

The old city wall of Leuven has largely disappeared and is no longer visible in the streets of the city. This project aims to make the city walls visible in the public space, and to put it on the mental map of residents and visitors of Leuven. The city wall is not restored literally, but marked within the public space by a family of three elements. The elements shows the history and location of the wall in the city of Leuven and give an idea of the size, continuity and the strategic importance for Leuven.

The fountain on Herbert Hooverplein is shaped like the street plan of Leuven, as Jacob van Deventer, the famous Dutch cartographer, drew it in 1550. It consists 60 water jets, 68 points of light and the diameter is 18 meters. Dirk Vansina (alderman for public works and youth) talks about the square: “In addition to the educational element, the fountain is above all a very fun game element in the middle of the city. Such a playful element makes the city fascinating and surprising. See how many children last year came to play in the fountain.”
