Nyréns Arkitektkontor has worked on the project for the public spaces of Kärrtorp which includes an upgrade of the central square and an adjacent bus square with connecting walkways and stairs. The aim has been to create a vibrant central public square in the heart of Kärrtorp. The project was finished in 2021.
The focus in the process of the design has been to preserve and develop the square’s original character from the 1950s and the many qualities it holds as a public space and social hub. The subway crosses the square over a bridge and gives the site a characteristic suburban feeling. The typical 50s feeling remains and has been strengthened through preserving and amplifying historical elements such as the fountain and the granite walls. The trees, the fountain and the pavement form the backbone of the design. New varied seating has been added upon request from the user dialogue and creates different types of meeting places. The pavement of small granite paving stones in a rounded pattern gives the square a characteristic continuous floor. The space between the trees and the buildings facades has a consistently smooth coating of concrete slabs that is accessible, where guideways for the visually impaired are placed. A zone closest to the facade can be used by the shops for exhibiting goods, outdoor cafes etc.
