Senator Marian Maloney Park by Janet Rosenberg & Studio

Senator Marian Maloney Park is a neighbourhood park located in Etobicoke at 40 Caven Street. The approximately 2-acre park was built through Development Charges by The Remington Group in coordination with the City of Toronto, which will own and maintain the park going forward. The park was officially named through a public survey in 2018 organized by the City of Toronto.

As the lead consultant on the project, JRS provided services from Schematic Design through Construction Documents and Contract Administration, working with a multidisciplinary team of consultants.

The park is an aesthetically beautiful and functional urban open space that offers a variety of opportunities for programmed activities as well as more flexible uses throughout the year. Integration and connections with the adjacent condominium developments and the surrounding neighbourhood inspired the strong geometry of the park. A central walkway, running alongside a linear water feature, creates quadrants of space which include a raised lawn amphitheatre, an open lawn for free play, a splash pad area, play structures for children, and a zone of flowing tall grasses and floating steel boardwalks. The custom shade structure is fabricated of a steel frame and extruded aluminium louvres, all painted a pure white to contrast with the green park and blue sky. A linear water feature includes a feature wall with a weir and a linear row of jets with adjustable water height. Clad in honed black granite and grey strata limestone, the feature is lit at night. Furnishings sited around the park include modern takes on linear wood benches, sculptural GFRC benches, and concrete cube seating areas – all providing a range of different opportunities for passive seating and community interaction.
