Overview + Perspective

Editor's note

Here’s a nice photo essay based on the projects by H+N+S. Using aerial photography it introduces a kind of a distant view or a critical angle, quietly re-questioning shapes and programmes they had put on the ground.

We are delighted that H+N+S shared with us this epic photo collection of their works that were realised throughout the Netherlands.

Maasvlakte 2

The objective of the Port Authority was to extend the port area through expansion of the Maasvlakte, combined with the creation of space for recreation and nature. The Maasvlakte is developing as an important site for natural and recreational activity.

National Military Museum

The Soesterberg Airbase, previously closed to public access, was opened in 2015 as the new, National Military Museum. The museum building itself, and the surrounding natural landscape, seamlessly merge into one another to create an accessible, informative and reflective space where the public can learn more about the history of the Dutch armed forces.

St. Hubertus Hunting Lodge

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the wealthy Kröller-Müller couple realised their dream with the construction of their incredible, exclusive country estate on the Veluwe. The estate is now open to the public, and the lodge itself has recently been completely renovated. Visitors can once again walk amongst the ponds and gardens, as was intended by the Dutch architect Berlage one hundred years ago.

Room for the Rivier Nijmegen

This is the most complex project within the Room for the River programme. By constructing a bypass channel, an elongated island is created in the river Waal, between the historic centre and the north shore of the Waal River. Several new bridges improve the connectivity of the area. The island and bypass channel together form a river park that not only reduces flood risks, but also offers recreational, ecological and aesthetic values.

Buitenschot

On behalf of Schiphol Group, a multidisciplinary project team designed a recreational park that simultaneously reduces ground noise from the airport. The design is a unique integration of landscape architecture, land art, and innovative technology.

Maasvlakteplaza Masterplan

For the Maasvlakteplaza in the heart of the Rotterdam Harbour, we developed a plan for both nature and industry. A large truck parking, a new central building, space for industrial development and bird islands have been designed to coexist in harmony.

Sand motor

With the Sand Motor pilot project, a large quantity of sand was deposited near the Dutch coast. Wind, waves and sea currents gradually distribute the sand along the coastline between Hook of Holland and Scheveningen.

Bypass Kampen

The construction of the Reevediep, a new bypass in the IJsseldelta near Kampen, is one of the largest Room for the River projects. The Reevediep is constructed to channel water, during high water levels, via the Drontermeer and the Vossemeer toward the IJsselmeer. H+N+S has been involved in this project since 2014: until 2014 the plans were executed by the Province of Overijssel and the project partners and as of 2014 by Isala Delta, the consortium.
