Hard Turm Park, Zurich

Between Density and Emptiness

In the development area Zurich West the Hard Turm Park takes a stand against the hermetisation of the urban environs: the open system of individually designed outside cells combines large monolithic structures such as the Toni-Areal, now transformed into an art academy, a motorway feeder, a railway viaduct, old and new residential areas and the nearby stadium site. As an invitation to urban living the outside spaces also enrich everyday life in the new residential quarter.

An Open Cell System

The underlying cellular structure of the new buildings continues in the outside space. Outside cells and circulation areas combine to form an integrative diversity: comfortable courtyards, communal playgrounds, generous public spaces and square seamlessly transition into each other. It is via the outside spaces that new and existing buildings such as the listed ensemble of residential buildings on Förrlibuckstrasse enter into a relationship with one another. And it is in context that the combination of old and new gains in identity.

A Web of Connections with Contrasting Features

Consistent elements, especially the ground covering, connect the artificial urban landscape. The outside cells on the other hand stand out from one another in their atmosphere and design details, making them specific locations. Contrasting spaces and moods create a tangible sense of tension. The outside web of connections, which ranges from the small to the large, from the nearest neighbourhood to the surrounding city, fills the emptiness between the major structures with atmosphere and life.
